IN THE DISTANT FUTURE
IN OUR FAMILIAR GALAXY
PIRAEUS GAMES PRESENTS:
SCIENCE FICTION GAME
So gather round the fire kids, and I'll tell you a story about a crazy old coot called Charlie Dean. He's been around as long as I can remember, and my parents and grandparents say the same. He's always been getting himself in to places people would rather he didn't. He was always popping up somewhere in the Veil. The Imperial Navy describe him as a right royal pain in the butt. His scout ship - the Vasco da Gama - always seems to be found orbiting interdicted zones, or touching down on planets in the middle of a battle. As you know, the Sulieman-class Type-S Scout/Courier can smell a bit rank after a few weeks in deep space. I heard that Charlie actually likes that smell. Now, anyways, no-one has seen Charlie for some time. Last I heard he'd headed out of the Imperium and in to the depths of the Outworlds Sector. No-one has heard from him since.
So perhaps some background will allow you to make sense of this story:
Welcome to the veil. What is the universe that Charlie Dean exists in? An adventure in space and time. But when? And where?
WHEN IS THIS?
The universe is old. From the universe's origin to the present day, 13.7 billion years have elapsed (A). In the first 400 million years there are no stars. Then the first stars condense from clouds of gas and dust, and ignite. After one billion years the first galaxies arise. Some of the hydrogen rich mineral poor population II stars soon explode to give rise to population I stars. The Earth forms after 9.1 billion years, and life arises 800 million years later. In the final two billion years, photosynthesis arises on Earth, then multicellular organisms, fish, amphibians, reptiles, mammals, apes, hominids, and finally humans.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
Life evolved on other worlds. Forerunners around one million years before present (B), the Ancients at about 300,000. Hominids and then humans arise on Earth about 200,000 years before present. It is only after the last ice age (10,000 BCE or 16,000 years before the "present day") that civilisations arise on Earth.
The Vilani branch of humanity found their empire five thousand years before present (C). Terran space travel starts two thousand four hundred years before present. Terrans win the nth Interstellar War against the Vilani Empire two hundread years later. The Terran Ramshackle Empire lasts 125 years later and the Long Night begins. Under Cleon, the Sylean Confederation expands out in to the vacuum formed by the Long Night, and the Third Imperium starts 1100 years before present.
SO WHERE IS THIS? WELCOME TO THE VEIL AND TO TRAVELLER - THE THIRD IMPERIUM
The observable universe is some 93 billion light years in diameter. The large scale structure of the known universe looks like foam, or a sponge, with large voids and strings or strands of matter in between. The strands consist of galaxies formed in to superclusters of multiple galaxies. The Milky Way (our galaxy) is part of the Virgo supercluster, which also contains the M31 Andromeda Galaxy, the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds, and some 1,500 to 2,000 other galaxies.
WHAT IS THE LYNCH-BLOSSE CLUSTER AND THE VEIL?
I'm glad you asked me that, Bob. A million years ago, the Lynch-Blosse globular cluster passed through the galactic plane between the Sagittarius and Orion Arms of the Milky Way. The cluster drew a skein of stars, dust and gases after it - the Veil. This area of space would one day host the Ancients, and then the three Imperiums of Humaniti.
WHAT IS THE THIRD IMPERIUM
The Veil is a non-canonical
campaign placed between the Spinward March and the Trojan Reach, but with an open unexplored border. This is achieved by drawing the Veil out in to the third dimension. The red cross marks the base of the Veil. To crossed in to the Veil from Trojans Reach or Spinward March, ships must traverse the Whisp Route - a Jump-3 route through a series of systems harbouring M-Class stars.
The Imperial Interstellar Scout Service mapped their way up the Whisp and into the Coreward Subsectors of Kaorin and Berimarís Sceptre in the mid-490s. The Whisp Route was, by its nature, difficult to navigate with the Tech Level 12 equipment available to the Imperium at that time. Several Rifts, with multiple, barely sustainable, Jump-3 passages across them, challenged the Scout Service Exploration Service. Eventually, massive fuel refineries orbiting sullen and isolated M-Class stars kept the route open.
